VAL KILMER - A Glorious Tribute to a Great Actor
Val Kilmer: From "Top Gun" to "SNL," Iceman Was Always Iconic
Due to COVID delays and Tom Cruise’s insistence on a theatrical release, Top Gun: Maverick took longer than expected to hit theaters. By the time it did, Val Kilmer was already deep into his battle with throat cancer. Yet, his return as Iceman was a crucial part of the film’s success.
Kilmer didn’t just play Iceman in the 1986 original and its 2022 sequel—he also reprised the role in a humorous way on Saturday Night Live in 2020.
In the SNL skit, Iceman is now a commercial airline pilot, still exuding the same overconfidence that made him famous.
He claims to have flown his plane at Mach 3, only to be immediately questioned by his co-pilot. Kilmer then cleverly responds, "I was shaving with a Mach 3 razor. When you’re shaving with a Mach 3, there’s no time to think—if you think, you’re dead."
Toward the end of the skit, Iceman suggests to his colleagues, "Let’s head to the hotel, shower, and play some volleyball," a hilarious nod to the famous volleyball scene in Top Gun. His crew, however, declines the offer.
Val Kilmer passed away at the age of 65, but his unforgettable performances and iconic roles will always be rememberd by fans
